Day 3: New Hampshire Autopsy

When a job opportunity dies, it seems appropriate to do an autopsy.  Why does an otherwise healthy job opportunity wither away?  What could I have done to keep it alive?

Fortunately, one of the people who was involved in the hiring decision talked to me on the phone today.  It was a great conversation.  He said, simply, that the person they hired had experience that made him a little bit better fit for the job.  I asked if there was anything I could have done differently in the interview, even something small, that would have made a difference.  He was very clear about saying that my interview was great and that people enjoyed meeting me, but the other candidate had slightly more applicable experience.

He also gave me some helpful ideas of ways I could gain the experience I lack.  My faith in humanity is high right now.

I’m convinced that managing expectations and staying motivated is part of the trick when it comes to a job search.  I heard a podcast interview with success coach Honoree Corder today, and she said that when she has people do a 100-day project, she tells them not to expect anything to happen for the first 43 days.  I’m sure there’s nothing scientific about that, but it is a useful guide.  According to that, I have another 40 days of waiting.
